Artist Statement

I have always wanted to do ceramics as a kid. I always enjoyed working with my hands ever since I started high school. I wanted to express myself through my art. When I decided to take a ceramics class sophomore year, I immediately loved the class. What's great about ceramics is that you can bring things in your mind literally to life. It wasn't just a drawing on paper, but a model of what I had imagined. My goal as an artist has always been to express my creativity and to inspire others around me.

When people get to know me, they soon find out I am a little bit of a perfectionist. When the smallest thing is wrong I need to fix that problem or else it will bother me forever. Being a perfectionist also shows that I am a hard worker and that I really care about my work. When creating my work, I always tweak my last idea so I always add to it and make it better. Sometimes I change my idea because it didn't work with the materials I use. I am also very open to other ideas. Sometimes I would add to my work because a peer would tell me other ways to improve it. I am very open to ideas and opinions.

I've made many pieces throughout the year in my advanced ceramics class. I've made a surrealist bust, salt and pepper shakers, a tea set, a trivet, and a handheld sculpture. My favorite would have to be the salt and pepper shakers, which are called "Pink Vines" (picture on the right) . I have always loved nature and its natural beauty. A lot of my work is inspired by nature, just like my salt and pepper shakers. I wanted them to look like they have vines wrapped around them with a flower stand. I have many other works that have flowers as their theme and they, in my opinion, have always been my best work.  I like to change it up every time with the colors and glazes. That's what makes each one so unique. What I love about clay is that you can create almost anything and it can look almost real and alive. I hope to continue taking art classes and making more people inspired to do art every single day.

Lastly, I would like to say thank you to Ms. Dunn as I would not of been able to create anything without her guidance in her class. You have taught me so much, not only in ceramics but everything there is to know about art.
