Note from the Artist
Jessica Nunes

I was inspired by the idea of medusa and nature. Medusa is the name given to a monster created in Greek mythology. According to Wikipedia, she is generally described as a "winged human female with living venomous snakes in place of her hair." She is perceived as a gorgeous women but when mad her snakes come out and if looked into the eyes she will turn her victims into stone. (A picture of her is to the right) I love nature and if you look at most of my current work, I always incorporate some sort of nature element. When I was brainstorming ideas for my bust, the thought of medusa came straight away to my mind. When sharing my idea to the class, my teacher gave me great inspiration to create a bust with "living" hair. Its not snakes, but it is an illusion of a stream of water, which looks like it is running through her hair.  The fact that I actually have some irony to my piece, that medusa is known for turning people into stone and my project is made out of ceramic, makes my piece even more interesting and a little humorous. I also tied both nature and the monster of medusa into the extra materials and ad-don's, like the gold eyes, the seashells and fish on the hair. The meaning behind this piece is that there's more to a person than meets the eye.
